Bookish Pet Peeves

Hey, everyone! I hope you’re all doing well and that your holidays are being spent well. I had a different post planned for today, but I didn’t finish it in time so it will probably go up in the next few days. Instead, we have a post where I’m basically just ranting about things that annoy me about books. More specifically: bookish pet peeves. I’m sure there are more bookish things that annoy me that aren’t on this list, but these are what I came up with. Let’s get started!

In no particular order

Movie/TV Show Book Covers – I’m all for movie/TV show adaptations, but I really don’t like it when the posters are put as book covers. I feel like it looks too realistic, if that makes sense. I love the artwork that goes into designing book covers and a poster from a movie doesn’t have that.

Film Adaptations Drastically Changing the Plot – Sometimes, plot or characterization changes are necessary and I don’t mind them; for example, aging a character up a little or adjusting how a scene is done. But if the change is really drastic or something that I thought could’ve been done without being changed, it bothers me since it didn’t stay true to the original story.

Stickers on Book Covers – I hate these! They’re usually something like “Now on Netflix” or “Soon to be a Major Motion Picture.” The stickers are so hard to take off and then they leave like half of the stickiness on the cover. And the most annoying thing is when they come off in small little strips, but leave the white sticky part.

Series Titles/Covers Not Matching – I love it when a series has the same formatting in all the titles and covers, and when it doesn’t, it just annoys me. I don’t really have any particular reason for it, I guess it just messes up my sense of order and perfection.

Cracked Spines – I know some people like these because it makes the book look read and well-loved, but I just hate how it looks. This is really only a problem with paperbacks, which I have more of, so I’m also super careful when it comes to reading those.

Bending Paperback Book Covers – This kind of goes with the cracked spines, but you know when you bend a paperback book cover, it gets that weird crease mark? It bugs me so much! I don’t know why, it’s just another one of those things that messes with my sense of perfection.

People Talking to Me While I’m Reading – I especially hate this when I’m reading a tense scene or something where I have to concrete on the words. It’s like, “I’m reading, can’t you see that?” And then once they’re done, more likely than not, I have to go back and reread what I was trying to read but couldn’t because they were talking.

Spoilers – I’m pretty sure this a universal pet peeve. I mean, who likes spoilers? If I’m never going to read the book, I don’t really care if I get spoiled or not, but if I’m currently reading it or planning to, spoilers are the worst.

Reviews Instead of the Synopsis on the Back Cover – There are some occasional times when I’ll pick up a book (back when we could freely go to a library or bookstore, I miss those times 😢) and I’ll turn the book over and there will be no synopsis. I don’t want to read reviews about the book and know that it’s a brilliant coming-of-age novel that will warm your heart. I want to know what the book is about.

When an Anticipated Read Disappoints Me – I feel kind of let down if a book I had high expectations for isn’t as good as I thought it was going to be. I’m sure everyone dislikes this, right?

Do you agree/disagree with any of these? What are some of your pet peeves?
