Let’s Talk Bookish: What Makes a Book Beautiful?
Hey, everyone, happy Friday! I hope you’re doing well. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve done a Let’s Talk Bookish and I’m looking forward to this week’s topic.
Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and is hosted by Rukky and Dani @ Literary Lion where we discuss various topics and share our opinions. Today’s topic is What Makes a Book Beautiful? (suggested by Dani).
What makes a book beautiful to you?
In terms of book covers, I think there are a lot of different ways that a book can be beautiful. A lot of it depends on the colors. I think color scheme is a major part of creating a good book cover. In my opinion, if you put together an orange and purple themed book cover, it kind of gives off a Halloween vibe. And of course, sometimes, colors that normally clash do work together. It all depends on the way the colors are used.
The format is also a big part of what makes a book cover beautiful. Making sure that it isn’t too cluttered, but it also doesn’t have too much white space is a big one. Having too many little things can take the attention away from the big part of the picture and the stuff that you want the reader to focus on. It also just is a lot to take in. On the flip side, not having enough stuff can sometimes just make the cover look a little boring. Although, sometimes covers are best like that.
Are there certain covers you’re drawn towards, and certain styles you stay away from?
Honestly, I don’t really know. I like a variety of book covers. Covers with a scene from the book are nice, like the Percy Jackson cover below. I also like ones that are centered more on the title with designs around it or a textured, but solid background. A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer is a nice example of it.
Since I don’t read a lot of horror or thriller, I tend to stay away from the darker-themed covers. Covers can show a lot about the genre of the book. For example, it’s quite obvious that It by Stephen King is horror and that Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede is fantasy by just looking at the cover.
What are some of the most beautiful book covers you’ve seen?
I’ve seen quite a few really beautiful book covers. Here’s a few book covers I’ve seen that I think are really pretty.
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee
The Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White
Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott
The Beast Warrior by Nahoko Uehashi
